Welcome to Popo !
Popo is a video processor which highlights small movements in an otherwise static scene. It is useful when monitoring wildlife scenes and you want to be notified when there is an event in the scene made by some small creature moving.
This could be for situations such as bat monitoring where the scene is a building and bats occasionally exit from a small hole in it. Or it could be a nest box where a bird enters occasionally, or you have continuous trail camera footage and you dont know what might enter the scene.
Often cameras will use a trigger, such as a PIR sensor, which detects mammal heat. But in many cases you may be looking at creatures which are cold blooded or have sufficient thermal insulation that it does not trigger it. Or it could be that the camera is viewing the scene with a telephoto lens and the targets are too far away for PIR sensors to detect. Maybe you may want to use a higher quality camera than the trail cams use. Or you may be using a thermal camera or other specialist video camera which lacks a suitable trigger.
This system is particularly suitable for bat monitoring where the bats are dark coloured, flying fast, in low light conditions, against a backdrop of similar colours to the bat. And this can be a challenging tedious task to do for an ecologist maintaining mental focus for multi hour video footage.
Popo is not infallible but has been shown to detect events with a score at least as good as a trained human is able to do.
It will process hours of footage in the background and provide a list of events for you to inspect in an easy clickable format saving a substantial amount of analysis time.
